Follow-Up Wednesday

Wednesday night, I headed back to Lou’s to cut my soap into bars. It’s so exciting.  I’m not really sure why this thrills me so.  I do enjoy making things.

Her husband Michael made her all these really interesting gadgets to make the process easier. And easy it was. Cutting up the bars only took a few minutes.

Naturally, I took photos of the whole thing. Well, Lou took the pics so I could do the cutting. 🙂

First thing was to remove the soap from the wood molds.

Then, remove the wax paper from the soap. The giant bar, in this form, looks a lot like fudge.

Then comes the cutting. How cool are these gadgets!?

And there you have it! 14 beautiful bars of peppermint soap, made by me.  Don’t I look like a huge dork?!  I love it.

Thanks Lou! You’re awesome!

Yesterday, I spent a big chunk of my day hanging out with my friend Bonnie and her husband. I have to share this because it’s too sweet: Her husband was on his way to the kitchen to make himself a cup of coffee and suddenly stoped, turned to me and said “You know Mylène, Bonnie’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” Doesn’t that just melt your heart?!

I’m one of those lucky girls who has been seriously blessed with tones of people in my life who inspire me.

I finished Steve’s clogs! They’re wonderfully perfect and drying on the vent. 🙂

I also crocheted an infinity scarf yesterday. It turned out exactly the way it was supposed to. I had been driving myself crazy trying to figure out the stitch for this project. Then yesterday morning, while I was having my coffee, looking online for said stitch, it dawned on me that it’s a single crochet worked in the round. The things I learn! I LOVE it.  I think I might need one of these.  It is the perfect length and it so cozy that I didn’t want to take it off.  BUT it’s not for me.  🙁

Tonight is my first of three night shifts. I plan to start Tina’a socks with that pretty BMFA I just received.

Hope everyone has a great and safe Easter weekend!

A Perfect Sunday

Sunday was soap-making day at my friend Louise’s.  I’ve been looking forward to this for so long!  I love making things.

This is the view driving up Lou’s driveway.  Isn’t it pretty?  I love her house.  They are completely off the grid, which I think is very cool.  The grounds are very vaste and picturesque.  It’s like a little haven.

Lou has a little studio in the basement where she makes all her soap and where she now has a large loom (that I find intimidating-looking).  It’s a happy space.

So, this is the soap-making process, part one.

We prepped the space, got together all the supplies and materials.

20130326-055928.jpg

We got the lye ready.  That’s the dangerous stuff that scares me a bit.

20130326-090031.jpg

Got the oils ready.

20130326-090039.jpg

Mixed the lye with the water.  Carefully!

20130326-055957.jpg

Then we heated up the oil on her woodstove.

20130326-060007.jpg

Then we prepped the molds that her husband hand-made for her.

20130326-060142.jpg

Then, when the oil/water mix and the oils reached approx. 37 degrees, we mixed the two together and stirred until it reached the right consistency.  Then we poured it into the molds.

20130326-092348.jpg20130326-092404.jpg

Covered with wax paper and put the cover on.

20130326-060215.jpg

The we wrapped each mold up with a wool blanket.  Something about warming up the soap.

20130326-060232.jpg

There they will sit until tomorrow night when I will go back to remove the soap from the mold and cut it into bars.  That’ll be part two.

When we were finished the with the soap-making, I finished up Lou’s french press cozy.  This project was part of a round-robin we did with some of the girls from our spinning guild (I bring roving and hand it to the person next to me for spinning.  That person spins my roving and passes it along to the person next to her for knitting/crocheting/weaving.  Then it comes back to me as an item.)  I was the knitter for Lou’s “item”.  It really didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to.  Next round-robin will be better.

I got to hang a bit and have a coffee with Lou in front of her grand fireplace.  I love this fireplace.  All her furniture is old/antique looking.  It’s just such a lovely space.

When I got home, I made a batch of Paleo cream of cauliflower & bacon soup.  Because it’s Paleo, there is no cream in my cream soup though.  🙂

Here’s the recipe:

3 cartons of chicken broth
1 head of cauliflower
1 white onion, cut smallish
3-6 cloves of carlic (depending how much garlic you like)
1 egg
1 lb of bacon
a little spittle of Sriracha (hot sauce)
salt and pepper

In a large saucepan, add chicken broth and cauliflower.  Cook on high so that the cauliflower gets soft.  Fry up the onion and the garlic until soft.  Add to broth mix.  Let cook until contents are soft.  In the meantime, wisk the egg in a small metal dish, holding the dish over the steam of the soup in order to thicken the egg.  Then cut up the bacon and fry it up until crispy.  Set both aside.  When the contents of the soup are soft, using a blender or a hand blender, puré the mixture.  At this point, add the egg, blending at the same time.  This will make the soup “creamy”.  Add half the bacon to the soup mix and blend, and set aside the other half for garnish.

It’s very tasty!

I also managed to finish up my felted clogs.  I think they might need one more tour in the washing machine though.  But, man are they comfy!  The double-soul makes then so cushy.  I love the color.

20130326-061720.jpg

Just as my day was wrapping up, I started some new clogs for Steve.  This time, they are not pink.  I found some black and grey Briggs & Little Regal in my yarn closet when I was cleaning.  PERFECT!  I’m making then a lot smaller too.  These should work.

I’m not finished the shawl.  It bores me.  I must be pretty close to being finished.  In a few days, the slippers will be done and I’ll likely work on the shawl – hopefully finish it.  Then I can make Tina’s socks with that lovely BMFA Med Pink Granite – that’s what she wanted.  But because socks are small and portable, I will likely start a bigger “home” project.  I can’t wait to start making a dent in my Ravelry queue.  I’m at 318 right now.  Yikes!

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Couple of Slow Nights

I just came off my block if night shifts. It was so slow that it made me super-grateful I have my knitting to keep me awake.  Now I’m off all weekend.  Yahoo!

I love this new hat! I made it for Steve but… I think it looks good on me. 🙂

I also ordered this yarn to make my GF Tina something (wish I could remember what it was she wanted). I love the colors. I hope she changes her mind and I get to keep it and make something for myself.  (Is that wrong?)

I’m so looking forward to this weekend. I’m hanging out with Jacob this afternoon but the minute he leaves, I’m popping in a chick movie and spinning my heart away. I’m almost finished spinning my Shetland (the one that was floating in the basement when I had the flood in 2010). It’s going to be a plain bulky sweater. I can’t wait to start working on that. It will be my first hand-spun & hand-knit sweater. I’m excited!

20130322-152525.jpg

Once I’m done spinning above-wool, it’ll get a nice bath (try to get the rest of the hay out) and while it’s drying, I’ll be making some felted slippers… Now that I know where all my felting wool is in the yarn closet. Hihi.

Tomorrow, I might clean something… But I’m easily distracted.

Sunday, I’m heading to Louise’s place to make peppermint soap. My coworkers think it’s funny how excited I am about that. But my face does not lie. I feel like a kid going to the zoo. No point hiding it.

It’s been a really awesome week.

I got a bit of not-great news: the money I had saved up to head down to Chicago for my new tattoo is now going to paying my income tax instead. I was expecting this from the sale of the rental last year, but I had all my extremities crossed it wouldn’t suck up the WHOLE tattoo fund. Oh well. C’est la vie. I chose to be positive about it and be grateful that I have the money to pay Revenue Canada.  I will save the money again.  No big deal.

Hope you all have an awesome weekend filled with things that make your heart smile.

Awesomeness!

This week has been A GOODER as my friend Pam likes to say.

I have benefits at work now since becoming full-time. This past week, Jacob and I both got our teeth cleaned, went to the eye doctor’s and finally got new glasses (after a billion years). I really like my new glasses and I’m pretty sure Jacob likes his too. They’re both just for reading but I might be more inclined to wear them now because I think they’re fun.

Honestly, I can’t believe I made him. I still can’t believe my offspring is 18 years old! As if?  Doesn’t he look like a real man?  I swear the kid has more facial hair then most of the grown men I know.

Steve took Jacob to the range to let him try a few different firearms. Look at the grin on the boy’s face!  Ok, he looks like a little boy here – a little boy who just got to play with a lot of really cool toys.

20130317-231403.jpg

Then yesterday, I got a smokin’ deal on my new toy!  I’ve been wanting a Mac for a while now cause my old laptop sucks big b**ls.  Thing is, MacBooks aren’t cheap.  So, here I was thinking it would take me 12 eternities to save up for one and this MacBook Air just appeared at a price I could most definitely afford.  Granted, it’s used.  But, it’s barely used.  So, someone (like moi) is extra-super-duper excited. I’ve been coming home from work and spending hours on this little thing (even after spending 12 hours looking at 8 computer screens).  I’m going to make it a beautiful case out of beautiful yarn.  I LOVE IT!! 🙂

And to add icing to the already super-sweet week, my sister got back from her trip and surprised me at work! I haven’t seen her since before Christmas. I tried really hard not to cry when I got to actually hold her in my arms and look at her face. Wonder if she noticed.

Lesson of the week: when you are positive and happy, really awesome shit happens!
