New Obsession: Knitting Podcasts

Dudes!  Did you guys know about this?  I feel like I’ve been living under a rock.

Here’s how I discovered knitting podcasts:

I’ve been following knittingexpat (Mina Philipp) on Instagram for a long time.  Then in November, I went to Qatar and the UAE.  When I was in Qatar, my friend Joanne told me about this little island called Bahrain and how pretty it was there.  I wish I had been there longer because I would have flown over for a day or so.  (I’m into counting countries now.)  A week goes by and I see something on Mina’s Instagram that she’s in Bahrain.  AS IF!  So I go on YouTube and watch my first ever Knitting Expat podcast.  I was immediately hooked.  OMG!  How come no one told me about this before!???  I went back and started from her very first episode and watched EVERY SINGLE ONE.  Hooked.  Netflix has gotten no love from me since.

Seriously people!  Knitting podcasts are really bad for my budget.  I don’t want to tell you how much money I’ve spent on patterns and yarn in the last few months.

Here’s some yarn-porn for you.

This stuff is amazing.  The two colours are merino/cashmere/nylon and the grey is merino/cashmere/alpaca.  It’s going to become (most likely) the 3 Color Cashmere Cowl by Joji Locatelli.  I know that in my last post, I said I didn’t like cowls but… I think I can make an exception for this one because it’s gorgeous.  Who knows?  I might even change my mind about cowls.

I now know about a billion hand-dyers, designers and project bag/notions makers.  I’m so amazed.

From Mina’s blog, I learned about so many other podcasters but I wanted to watch something Canadian.  Then I came across the Grocery Girls Podcast.  These two sisters are HI-LARIOUS! They interact much like my sister and I do, except my sister is not at all crafty.  From watching them, I discovered so many more yarns, so many more patterns.  Dudes, I didn’t know who Joji Locatelli was!  I had some of her patterns in my Revelry queue but had no idea she had so many amazing patterns.  Same goes for Melanie Berg, Lisa Mutch, Martina Behm.  All these ladies have designed some amazing shawls that I’m itching to cast on.  My horizons have been broadened.

I’m also stalking Voolenvine YarnsPlucky KnitterWoolen BoonFlock Fibre Studio (Canadian!), PolkaDotCreek (Canadian!)Hedgehog FibresHue LocoLong Dog YarnAncient Arts Fibre (Canadian!) on Etsy and Instagram.  I could go on.  And on.  And on.  There are so many fabulous dyers out there.  It really makes me want to start dying yarn.  I’ve never been a fan of dying… but I’m slowly realizing how much fun it could be.  I just have to find good bases now.

I’m SO inspired!

If you haven’t yet watched a knitting podcast, GO.  NOW.  And keep a pen and pad nearby.  You’ll need it.  Trust me.  🙂

Scarf vs. Cowl

So, which camp is your tent pitched in?

Mine is definitely and firmly set up in the scarf camp.  Here’s why:

I love knitting (or crocheting) cowls.  I hate wearing cowls.  When I put something around my neck, I want it to actually cover my neck – not decorate my outfit.  Most cowls hang too low and leave too big an opening to be practical and warm when it hits -25C where I am.

A scarf is pretty and practical.   You can wrap it as tightly or as loosely as you want – you don’t really have to commit to either.

Perfect Example:

That brioche cowl is amazingly beautiful.  It’s Hedgehog yarn that I got when I went to Philadelphia.  I would probably forever force myself to wear it just because.  I’m contemplating ripping it out and making something else. (I didn’t use a pattern for this.)

This scarf is the Portfolio Scarf by Erika Flory.  It is also made using souvenir yarn from Philadelphia.  Because I can wrap it around my neck and tie it in the front, I wear this “shawl” all the time.  It’s one of my favorites.

I’m interested to know what your preference is and why.  Leave me a comment below.

Have a great week!

Yarn Review!

Noro Kureyon

Fingerless Mittens

Short Row Hat

Shades pictured: 188 (mitts), 263 & 368 (hat)
Ball Weight/Yardage: 50 grams/100 metres
Needle Size Recommended : 4.5mm-5mm  (I used 4.5mm/US 7 for my hat and 4mm/US 6 for my mittens)
Fibre Content: 100% wool
Care: Ball band suggests dry-cleaning but how realistic is that?  I would suggest hand washing in cool water with a wool wash.  It’s 100% wool

This yarn is like your favorite pair of old jeans – AWESOME!  It’s not a perfect yarn.  It’s a single – as in one ply.  The singles I’ve worked with so far are very rarely perfect and evenly spun.  That’s part of their charm though.  When worked in a simple stitch like stockinette or garter stitch, the unevenness is lovely.

Now let’s talk about the colour!  Noro is famous for their exotic and unusual colour combinations.  When I think “NORO” I think bright, rich, intense colours that I would never think to put together on my own.

I love the 188 colorway.  It’s really appealing to me.  But when I started working with the 263 colorway, I was really iffy about it.  I usually love earth tones but for some reason, I just wasn’t feeling it.  The more the colours changed though, the more dazzled I became.  In the end, the colours came together perfectly and made this beautiful hat – my new go-to.  Trust in the people that design this yarn.

Where I got it:  yarncanada.ca

On the Yarn Canada website, you can find 80 shades of Kureyon.  Sheesh!  So many options.  How does one choose??

Packing Experiment

I just got back from Doha, Qatar and Abu Dhabi and Dubai, UAE.  I was gone from November 7th to November 16th.

Before I left, I decided I was going to pack carry-on only.  I always pack too much.  Plus I had some funky transfers and I didn’t want my luggage to get lost on the way there.  Who cares if it gets lost on the way back.  They deliver it to you when it’s located anyway.

Why do we always over pack?  Who knows.  Maybe we’re afraid we won’t want to wear what we brought so we bring extra?

Suitcase dimensions:  17″ wide x 14″ high by 7″ deep.  That’s pretty small.

The Suitcase

Here’s what I packed:

1 travel pillow – used.
1 camera – never took it out.  Not once.  Used my phone the whole time.
1 sweater – which I mostly wore in the A/C house in the morning when I got up.
1 pair of running shoes – wore them one when I knew I would be doing a lot of walking.
1 pair of flip flops – used every single day.  Also handy when going through security at the airports.
3 bras – one black sport, one white sport, one beige big-girl bra.  I only used the two sports.
3 long sleeved blouses – only wore two.
3 long pants – only wore two.  I wore my new Lululemon Studio pants a lot.  I love them.
2 long skirts – only wore one.
3 thin long sleeve thin open front shirts (to go on top of tanks) – wore them all
7 tanks – only wore four
2 PJ tank/boxer combo – wore both
4 pair of ankle socks – only wore one.
1 swimsuit – wore it.
1 dress – didn’t wear it.
1 scarf – wore it and purchased a few more.  😉
14 underware – they don’t take a lot of room. I used one pair per day. I didn’t need the extras.
1 coat – wore it until I got to the airport.  So if you’re getting a ride from the same person to/from the airport, ditch the jacket.
1 portable battery pack to re-charge my phone on the go.  Get a good one.  Mine overheated and it made me worry.

Actually Used

The first picture is what I packed.  The second picture is what I actually used.

It must be noted that my clothes are small.  If you were a 6′, 250 lb dude, this wouldn’t work.

It should also be mentioned that I had access to laundry.  I washed two outfits.

Conclusion?  I wore my favourite stuff more than once.  I think we all do that.  Even if you don’t have access to laundry like I did, get some little travel laundry soap thingies and wash your stuff in the tub and hang to dry.  Might make for some stiff pieces but they’ll soften up when you put them on.  Alternatively, use the laundry service in the hotel if they have one.  Or hit up a laundromat if you’re not in a super remote area.

If you’re a traveler (as opposed to a “vacationer”), packing light is important and way more convenient.  Imagine how quickly you can get your transfers when you don’t have to wait for your luggage to come off the plane.  And it’s so much easier to lug around when you just have a few small pieces.

Other tips:

  1. Put all your liquids in one leak-proof bag and put them somewhere you can easily access them – like one of the front pockets of your suitcase or pack.  If they ask you to show them all your liquids when you go through security, you’ll be ready.
  2. Wear shoes you can easily slip on and off.  It’s handy when you’re getting all your stuff after it went through the scanner thing. Trying to lace your shoes while everyone is rushing past you is no fun.
  3. Don’t wear a belt.  It’s a pain in the arse to get back on after you’ve gone through security and rushing to gather the rest of your things.
  4. Don’t wear more than two layers of clothing.  They’ll make you take off everything that’s not directly covering skin.  This will save you time.
